What’s a Butkus?

Dive play is the most basic of the game. Goal: Gain one yard. The quarterback takes the snap, pivots, and hands the football to the running back – who hits the line of scrimmage, head-on. The goal is to gain a yard or two. It’s not pretty, and it rarely results in a big game, but it builds confidence by creating a clear goal and accomplishing it. If you simply don’t have the drive and determination to gain a yard, how do you expect to get a touchdown?

Finding something presupposes that you are looking for it! Finding your Butkus, at its core, means finding something you already have. It is already a part of you, perhaps hidden deep within your psyche or more likely, hidden in plain sight. Under your nose, in your heart.

In Kevin Costner’s “A Field if Dreams,” his character, Ray Kinsella, hears a voice from the cornfield: “If you build it, it will come.” He is asked to trust a whisper and listen to a feeling. He wants us to listen to the voices and then take action – completely by faith.

Even if corn time isn’t calling you, I’m sure you’ve had an inspired thought while showering or driving. The gut that took action.

Your Butkus, I say with a nod, is found slightly to the south by reaching around and finding your rear end. I would add with both hands! Maybe the reason you haven’t found your Butkus yet is because you’re sitting there!

So what is a Butkus?

No, it’s not But-Kis, it’s pronounced But-Kus. You say it on purpose, and always with attitude. If you’re a sports fan, you’ve probably heard the name Dick Butkus. In fact, most people in North America have heard of the name, although they may not know who or what it is.

And yes, it’s a strange name.

But, there is nothing funny about the image or the iconic status that this name represents. As a four-year-old, when I first heard this name and saw the NFL picture of Dick Butkus, I was intrigued. He was actually more like “surprised”.

NFL Films states; “Dick Butkus played football with religious fervor, a constant obsession not to dominate, but to dominate and demoralize. For Dick Butkus, it’s never a game, it’s a street fight, a place for everyone, a war without limits. Butkus was the most devastating running back in the game and the NFL It’s full of stories of men who crossed the . He was a force of unmanageable proportions; he was Moby Dick in a pot of gold. His career is the most enduring work of destruction ever. Done by anyone, anywhere, anytime on the football field.”

Dick Butkus is remembered as the toughest man to ever play professional football. A guy, anyway; would not leave He never won a championship or a Superbowl; hell his team was so bad they never made it to a playoff game. That, however, did not stop him from becoming one of the best to ever play NFL Football.

I, playing football at the age of twelve, wanted to be Dick Butkus. Everything was awesome from his pigeon toes to the colors of his uniform. It all captured my imagination. His linebacker stance, crouching like a mountain lion ready to pounce, was scary enough. But when he moved, fully committed, he launched himself with indifference; like there was no other player on the field.

Butkus, for me, became a metaphor for movement and a symbol of effort and achievement. No matter what, you don’t give up. If I called my Butkus, I knew what to do, and when to do it.

Now that I’ve painted a picture of what Butkus was like and how important he was, I have to say, I didn’t get it right away. In fact, it took me over thirty years to understand. I had to look deep into my memories to find something I thought I already knew.

And that’s the rub! “Having it means nothing if you don’t use it” is a topic for later discussion, but for now, it’s safe to say; knowing something does not make it valuable.

Smart people are regularly overworked, underpaid, and underestimated not only by others, but especially by themselves. Michelangelo, the great artist (not the ninja turtle) says, “The greatest danger for most people is not in aiming high and falling short, but in aiming too low and missing the mark!”

Have you been getting the low end of what you ask for? Are you looking for success in the wrong places? You were taught, as I was, that opportunities take years of suffering to realize. Are they out of your control? Have you been told to learn more, build skills you didn’t have, and go places someone else set you up? Then, when you arrived, again, it was going to be tough, life was actually tough. You had to be tough and learn to put up with what you don’t want, – to get what you do! stupidity

I say: what you want – wants you, what you are looking for is looking for you. What you want does not just exist, more precisely, it already exists within you. It’s not difficult, but yes, it’s intense and requires your full attention! Have you heard, am I sure of the natural laws of the universe? That the “law of attraction” is not an external magnet to get you what you want, but instead synchronizes your desires to bring you more of what you already have.

In “The Lion King”, Mufasa called down from the sky to his son, Simba, “Remember who you are!” Your job is to find, perhaps, simply remember “what” you already have. What does he whisper? will take you to Find Your Butkus.

Hit that; Remember who you are! Find your words, Find your??? In life!

Just like the basic immersion game, create a goal that you can count on, that builds confidence. Keep it simple, warm as a puppy. Guaranteed to earn a yard every time you need it. Only feeling good can put you in the right frame of mind to start noticing what’s important.

It’s not about knowing what works in life, no, it’s about finding your happiness. Trust me, if my dream was a guy named Dick Butkus, could you want anything crazier? Open the door to your desires, listen to the realm of your dreams and let all the people, places and things you desire come to you.
