The "Gutterfighting Way"
As warrior trainers, we must ensure that our students not only have a “win at all costs” mindset, but also have a battle system that has been pressure tested. You have to tap into them the skills that will work, no matter where they are or what they are doing. I think training the “Gutterfighter Way” is your answer, and I’ll explain why.
Gutterfighting – “The Mental Side” Every day thousands of people train in a martial arts academy. I think this is awesome! Martial arts help develop self-discipline, self-confidence, self-esteem and physical fitness. So what exactly is the problem? Let me ask you a question. Take any student of Karate, Kung Fu, Kenpo, Tae Kwon Do or any other martial art and ask them this: when was the last time you talked about violence in a physical encounter? When was the last time you thought about the violence of human aggression?
Physical fights are brutal! I’ve been in law enforcement for over 24 years, so I’ve seen my share of violence. It’s not a nice thing. It is your duty to mentally prepare each student for this. Okay, let’s say one of your students has trained for three or four years, three nights a week, at least an hour per session. Wonderful, I applaud them. They have probably reached the equivalent of a Black Belt in most martial arts. However, do they really know if the skills they’ve paid their blood sweat, tears and hard earned money for will come in handy when they need it most? The student must be trained to recognize and accept the realities of violent confrontation. Please do not fail to impart this valuable knowledge. They need your expertise. The question you need to ask yourself is: have I tested my techniques, my tactics and my methods in a realistic environment and made sure they will work? If you don’t know if your skills will work, how will your students know?
“Will this work in the inevitable battle of being able to instinctively use it against an opponent who is determined to prevent me from doing so, and who is trying to eliminate me by fair or foul?” Lieutenant Colonel Rex Applegate, kill or die
As you may know, when faced with a violent confrontation, people in need will run (flight), attack (fight) or freeze. When the mind and body are not prepared together, it has been my observational experience that most people will not do anything in the face of a conflict. I have witnessed law enforcement and the military exhibit the expression “deer in the headlights” because they did not develop the proper mindset to handle these stressors. They were certainly trained in physical skills, but they did not receive the correct mental programming.
The will to win can be achieved through reality based training. Here are two simple examples of training that will make a world of difference to any practitioner. On the one hand, a very high percentage of physical attacks take place in low-light situations. It’s a perfect environment for evil. When was the last time you turned off the lights in your dojo or training facility and practiced your techniques in reduced light? Second, when did you practice self-defense skills in the clothes you wear every day, and not the clothes you wear in the training facility? I rarely wear sweat pants, nor do my daily activities in a Gi! Practice these two simple exercises, along with a real threat assessment, and you’re on your way to winning. I’m all about winning. Please start training yourself and your students with reality in mind.
Gutterfighting – “The Physical Side” I teach a system that takes its name from the Defendu techniques developed by Fairbairn and Sykes. The name given to our system is “Gutterfighting”.
“When you’re caught, you’re down, and you’re gone if you don’t ATTACK… And remember, it’s ‘Gutterfighting’: any means, fair or foul, to save your life.” WE Fairbairn
Our Gutterfighting system blends Krav Maga, Filipino Martial Arts, World War II Fighters and Grappling skills. Each of these fighting styles has been pressure tested in battle. Our Gutterfthing is to “fight” and “win”. One of the most interesting principles of our combat system is to quickly charge in front of the threat, get as close as possible and finish it before it can counterattack. Never wait to attack. When you see an imminent threat, attack with all the ferocity of a caged animal and don’t stop until your opponent is no longer a threat.
I’ve done my best to ensure that our Gutterfighting is designed to withstand the pressure and tension of a full-on confrontation. It is a collection of attacks and defenses in which the smallest person can defeat a larger opponent. It’s brutally efficient, easy to learn and easy to maintain. Gutterfighting is not cool to fight. Going beyond survival and actually beating your attacker is what I believe and preach every day! We want our students to win from a legal, mental and physical standpoint, and our mission is to teach them how to do that.
Our Gutterfighting training practices combine the use of simple equipment and bodyweight exercises with focus letter and striking Thai pads in a circuit training format. This method to this madness is to help you better prepare for the stress of a violent confrontation! We believe we are “fit for battle.” As said before, the violent are the brutal; your students must have the tenacity to keep fighting until they win. The great champion Muhammed Ali stated:
“Champions are not made in the gym. Champions are made from something inside: a desire, a dream and a vision. They have to have last-minute stamina, they have to be a little bit faster, they have to have skill and will. But will has to be stronger than skill.”
There are certainly many great men who have paved the way for Combatives, and they all deserve credit for their work. All have been an inspiration in the development of these fighting concepts.
Gutterfighting – “Striking & BEAT Target Model” We don’t teach fancy calling techniques. I think anything will do when applying the BEAT target model; however, here is a short list of some striking techniques we use: Ax Hand (long/short), Face Smash, Chin Jab, Head to Head, Straight Blast, Cobra Hand, Elbows, Hammer Fist, Knee and Shin. the kicks
We use the BEAT model applying all striking techniques. BEAT is short for Brain, Eyes, Abdomen and Testicles. This striking application model was taken from the great book One-Strike Stopping Power – How to Win Street Confrontations Speed and Skill by Frank Albert. This book is available at http://www.paladin-press.com.
All striking techniques are applied to one of these target areas and are used to distract your opponent to leave the threat area or distract your opponent to apply effective takedown for follow-up control. As you already know, these hits probably won’t result in an immediate knockout but they will usually cause a lot of distraction. Hitting these target areas will create a very short period of time where your opponent is not thinking about you, but their own pain. That’s your window of opportunity. Master him! Don’t stand around waiting for something else to happen. Use the distraction window to your advantage and keep fighting until your opponent is down and out. You have to fight “down and dirty”. Don’t give up until it’s done.
Many years ago, Forrest E. Morgan wrote a wonderful book called Living the Martial Way. There is a very interesting quote in his book: “If someone were to ask what man should devote the most time to, I would answer him: “Training””. Some might find this a bit fanatical, but I would disagree. Someone once said, “Proper preparation prevents poor performance.” I definitely agree with this statement. Remember that as a warrior trainer, you must also set aside time each day to practice your warrior skills; this is the only way to grow and win! What are warrior skills? They are simply life skills. Anyone who adopts a warrior mindset and prepares their body properly can handle life’s straight pitches as well as its curve balls.
So there you have it, the “Gutterfighter Way!” Prepare your mind, prepare your body, practice your physical skills and be ready for every fight. Hopefully the day won’t come when you need these skills, but if you do, BE READY! Train with the Gutterfighting mindset and practice all your survival skills until they become second nature. “train today for tomorrow’s battles.”
