Global Warming Hyperbole

They call global warming skeptics “anti-science.” However, the term is a misnomer because skeptics are not actually against science, they are just skeptical of the claims of science believers. Here are some reasons for their skepticism:

• Doomsday predictions. Future climate projections for nearly every region of the world are inherently apocalyptic. If you live in a dry area, it will only get drier. Areas with a lot of precipitation will only get wetter. More flooding will submerge flood-prone areas; more winter snowfall will blanket areas traditionally hit by heavy winter snow. Even in the short term, there is no improvement. You’d think that growing seasons in Siberia or Canada might be extended by warming, and they’d probably have bountiful crops for decades to come. Maybe the Sahara would get more rain and turn into a more livable savannah. Such a change was never predicted. Instead, we hear only catastrophic scenarios. In my opinion, this is deliberately designed to scare the public into action. Such hyperbole by politicians is understandable as most politicians are inclined to exaggerate or exaggerate facts, but scientists should not spread pseudoscience.

• Science neutral. Scientists claim to be neutral, speak only the truth, and rise above personal politics. Ironically, this isn’t the case, as I’ve heard scientists who accept climate change see scientists who question climate change as dishonest or tools of Big Oil or Big Tobacco (yes, Big Tobacco! They just can’t kill with cigarettes Enough kids died, so now they want to destroy the whole planet!). Skeptics sometimes point to a belated snowstorm or cold snap as evidence against global warming. Climatologists, meteorologists and other scientists condemn such evidence, explaining that one atypical storm or weather event does not disprove climate theories. They are correct. Unusual local or regional weather events are not necessarily related to climate. Additionally, climate change will persist for decades and may not be observable over a season, a year or even a few years. Yet when defenders of climate change use the same storm as evidence to substantiate their scientific beliefs, the scientific community is eerily silent. A fair and honest scientist would be as quick to condemn the latter statement as the former. Yet their silence, and the aforementioned doomsday scenario, suggest that many scientists are just as inconsistent and biased as the skeptical scientists and non-scientists they condemn.

• Climate change is the culprit of everything. Whether it’s Tropical Storm Sandy, Hurricane Katrina, or brutal winter blizzards, it’s all down to climate change. A cool day in midsummer? A warm day in the middle of winter? sleet? wind? Freezing rain? There is no need to accept freak weather, blame God, or even sue “Mother Earth” because climate change is the real culprit. Some also attribute tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic activity to climate change. Clearly, none of these “natural events” preceded man-made (man-made) climate change. By the way, this blanket culpability is why they changed the name from “global warming” to “climate change”. It allows its promoters to attribute any “acts of God,” unwelcome weather or unusually cold weather to human activity.

• Storm damage and loss of life. Every blizzard, hurricane or major storm takes a tragic toll on human life. Everyone grieves the loss of life, and we should continue to do what we can to minimize these seemingly senseless deaths. However, all claims that storms are becoming more expensive and deadly are deceptive. In general, real estate is worth more today than it was a few decades ago. Buildings and structures are also more expensive, and construction often takes place in unstable areas, such as flood zones, near seismic fault lines, or even below sea level near the ocean. Furthermore, the population has increased significantly in a very short period of time. Over the past five decades, the United States alone has added more than 120 million people; Canada and Australia have nearly doubled their populations; the United Kingdom has added nearly 10 million people; China and India have each added more than 600 million people; the world The newly added population exceeds 4.5 billion. Any major storm would cause more economic damage and tragically claim more lives simply because real estate costs increased and the world’s population increased.

• Carbon Footprint. It’s the epitome of hypocrisy: the wealthy fly private jets to global warming conferences, environmentally conscious celebrities fly gas-guzzling limousines to movie openings and awards shows, and performance artists fly and truck crews and equipment from Touring the globe from city to city while preaching ecological clichés in the show. Maybe when they heat, cool, and light their mansions with real renewable energy and get there on foot, bike, or at least carpool, skeptics will start to believe. What happened to lead by example? Imagine a rally to save a local park from development. Celebrities, politicians and other speakers lament the loss of pristine beauty. They called on the community to come together and do whatever it takes to save the park. After the rally, paper bags, empty water bottles, plastic bags, flyers and other miscellaneous littered the park. Would anyone really believe that the speakers and their supporters meant business? Why is it acceptable to exclude the rich and famous from practicing what they preach simply because of their status?

• Carbon credits. Which brings us to carbon credits. Paying a company to invest in green energy can be a good investment; using that investment as an excuse to continue a carbon-wasting lifestyle is two-faced. Many climate change leaders claim to be “carbon neutral” simply because they have purchased carbon credits. The easiest way to see if this works is to ask a simple question. What if everyone bought carbon credits, became technically carbon neutral, but continued to disregard their lifestyle? Clearly, this will do little to combat climate change. We don’t have the technology to make the whole world or even the whole country carbon neutral. Carbon credits are a way for the very wealthy to “buy” lifestyle changes. This gives the impression of genuine sacrifice for the cause and allows them to continue to denounce those who remain skeptical of climate change. During the American Civil War, wealthy people avoided fighting by paying the bills or finding alternatives. They may have contributed to the cause, but everyone knew they weren’t in the actual battle.

• Kyoto Treaty. During the Clinton administration, the Kyoto treaty failed to secure a single vote in the U.S. Senate. Among its many proposals, the Kyoto Protocol seeks to set a global standard on carbon emissions. Not even the “environmental senators” voted for it. Almost all proposals for global greenhouse gas emissions exclude China (the largest “carbon polluter” country) and India, the two most populous countries in the world. The arguments against including them are mainly economics. Cutting emissions would cripple their economies and lead to increased poverty. If this is true for the economies of China and India, it is true for other countries as well. Additionally, proponents argue that these two countries, as well as third world or developing countries, should be exempted because they do not cause problems. The culprit lies with the industrialized nations of the West. Even if this were true, exempting countries from their emissions would only exacerbate the problem, as they would continue to emit greenhouse gases. Is the goal to alleviate our western guilt or to save the planet?

• Satellite evidence. Large storms recorded by weather satellites are visually impressive. Pointing to videos of massive storms, experts claim their sheer size reflects the effects of climate change. They make a similar argument for Arctic sea ice. Through satellites, we can now accurately measure the annual summer ice return, and science can confirm that the polar ice caps have shrunk over the past few decades. However, while these observations may indicate a change in the climate, according to NASA, the first successful geosynchronous satellite was launched in 1964. Polar satellites didn’t exist until the 1970s. Before that we didn’t have any satellite data at all. Thus, from a climate perspective, much of the scientific information and observations, while valid, are relatively recent.

• Al Gore. It certainly doesn’t help the science movement when the people most associated with the cause are politicians. There is no doubt that people have mixed opinions about the politics and personality of former Vice President Al Gore. But it is indisputable that he had no scientific training. I would also argue that he doesn’t understand scientific argument or method, and that it is unparalleled presumptuousness when he questions the scientific expertise of those who disagree with him. If having an ex-politician like Al Gore as a voice for the fight against climate change doesn’t bother you, imagine this face is Dick Cheney, Tony Blair, John Howard, Stephen Harper , even Sarah Palin.

• Wealth transfer. It also doesn’t help the cause of climate change when there is a formal discussion at the international level about the transfer of wealth from rich to poorer countries. Remember, the stated goal of climate change fighters is to reduce global carbon emissions. This goal is sensible and desirable. However, diverting funds from one group to another is social engineering, and again an attempt to appease the guilt of the West. This of course has nothing to do with lowering the world’s carbon emissions.
