The Science Fiction Movies That Have That Real Sense Of Classic Science Fiction

Granted, the Star Wars and Star Trek films are two of the greatest sci-fi classics of all time, but they’re based on futuristic realism rather than 1950s mystique. Star Trek was great science fiction when it first came out as TV episodes, but the movies that came out later took away from the futuristic realism in the true classic science fiction sense. I enjoyed watching “Independence Day,” but was excited about “Mars Attacks,” which came out shortly after “Independence Day.” I’m confused as to why “Mars Strikes” wasn’t released before “Independence Day,” which I knew would be a huge hit. I thought “Martian Attack” would be a hit too, but it was dropped after “Independence Day” came out. I thought maybe the makers of “Mars Assault” thought it would do well after “Independence Day” got everyone into a sci-fi frenzy, but it didn’t.

My favorite sci-fi movies are “Martian Attack” and “Star Troopers”. Both have a real feel of sci-fi in the classic sci-fi sense. In fact, I’m under the impression that the Martian attack idea was pulled from the original Star Ship Troopers publication. I haven’t looked into this yet, but I did see some original “Martian Assault” cards, some of which had bug armies on them.

In 1996, the “Martian Strike” movie was released based on the 1962 “Martian Strike” trading card. The movie is “Awesome!”. The “Martian Assault” movie captures a true sense of sci-fi with great special effects and characters. The “Mars Attacks” films never felt as true or possibly true to the story as “Star Wars” and “Star Trek.” For me, the real point of this type of fiction is that it depicts things that can never be true. Little people with huge brains carrying ray guns invade Earth, showing for all futures what Martians would look like if they were real. Martians used to be called humanoids, with two antennae protruding from the back of their heads, but with “Martian Attacks,” Martians are now seen as little people with huge brains and ugly faces. Ever been riled up in Congress and wanted to see them destroyed? Watch this “Mars Attacks” movie, near the end some little Martians pretend to be negotiating peace with an all seated Congress, then suddenly pull out their ray guns and vaporize the mess of humanity. Eventually humans figured out the Martians’ weak spot and destroyed them, which is always the case, but the “Martian Attacks” movie is well worth watching. I could watch it over and over again and never get tired of it.

“Star Trek” is a great movie. I was really hooked on the movie, the classic sci-fi feel is all over the place. The giant bug army controlled by Cerebral Bugs allowed themselves to be captured only to gather information on the Olympic-sized bugs in the third movie. These characters really fit the image of the movie, and they blend into the plot of bugs destroying human life brilliantly. At least the commanders’ soldier uniforms are a bit 1940s-inspired, with futuristic armor and leg studs that bugs can go straight into. These weapons have clips and they do get reloaded with new clips from time to time, but the clips fire so many rounds that I think the rifle makes its own bullets. But then I concluded that the clip was probably the power pack and the rifle fired hot plasma. In my personal opinion, the trooper movie is a great movie in the sense of classic alien fiction, and the movie in the sense of classic fiction is what I really like. Not the alien novels of the 1930s or 1940s, but the alien novels produced in the 50s and 60s. I did watch the original Star Trek episode from 1966. I’ve seen it all. I haven’t seen them in decades and could watch them again.

I also enjoyed the 2005 alien fiction film “War of the Worlds,” which is based on Martians assembling three legged fighter jets with 1890s heat rays and placing them in a modern setting.

Sharknado is quite popular in certain wildlife fiction watcher circles, I saw the first movie but only took it as corny entertainment.

Superhero graphic novels are great too. The Batman movie took first place for best superhero depiction. I love the Spiderman movies too, but the two main actors playing Spiderman and his girlfriend didn’t appeal to me. The villains in the Spider-Man movies are hot. I also really like the “Iron Man” movies. The “Iron Man” movie has done a good job in terms of actor selection and plot. Thor isn’t bad either.

The cartoon novel movie The Flintstones is excellent, except that Rosie O’Donnell was a mistake as Betty. Betty, like Wilma, was a slender and pretty woman. Betty isn’t a chubby woman with a big mouth like Rosie O’Donnell. Rosie O’Donnell’s blunders aside, “The Flintstones” is a wonderful cartoon-fiction movie. “Casper the Friendly Ghost” is definitely an excellent cartoon fiction film. I really liked the special effects and the plot.

Monster fiction is also great if monsters are played well. I’m not a fan of zombie movies, although I did see a good one. There is a large group of zombie lovers who are most likely the goth crowd.

I’ve seen many sci-fi movies of all genres that are well constructed and played well within the genre of sci-fi. The “Martian Assault” and “Star Troopers” movies are by far my favorites, and they play well.

Are there worm planets somewhere in the universe? A giant flying saucer hovering over the city and shooting a giant energy ray in our future? Huge three-legged machines emerging from the ground, and what’s operating them is slimy green? It won’t be out of the realm of reality after 1000 years.

The difference is “futuristic realism” versus “mystery” science fiction. What’s your favorite type of science fiction?
