Psychodrama and Christian Counseling – Christian User-Friendly Psychodrama
The psychodrama begins in 1921 with JL Moreno, a physician who immigrated to the United States from Austria in 1925. Blatner defines psychodrama as a method of psychotherapy in which patients act out relevant events in their lives rather than simply talking about them. This involves not only exploring historical events in action, but, more importantly, exploring dimensions of psychological events that are not usually dealt with in the course of traditional drama: unspoken thoughts, encounters with people who were not there, thoughts about how others may feel and Fantasy depictions of thought, possibilities for envisioning the future, and many other aspects of the phenomenology of human experience.

Moreno envisioned a religion based on the acknowledgment that every human being is like God and has the ability to manifest the Creator in every human being. The expression of these religious beliefs will manifest in action, interacting with others according to principles based on the sanctity of each individual’s spontaneity and creativity. Since most of what happens to us is a whole experience and not just verbal, the technique of psychodrama allows life to be recreated in such a way that it can be revisited, understood, restated, reconstructed, processed and rehearse new behaviors in a safe and protected atmosphere. Relationships between group members microscopically reproduce society within the group as well as their own personal relationship forms, giving us the opportunity to see in situ how members interact, give them feedback, and even gain new patterns of interaction through conflicting relationships .
Basic framework of psychodrama: The basic framework of psychodrama entails a director (therapist), a facilitator (cooperating therapist or group member), a stage (where the action takes place), an audience (other group members), and a protagonist (who chooses to deal with his or her question group members). The beauty of this structure is that it allows the protagonist to project anything she or he wants onto the stage. This story belongs to the patient not to the therapist. Anything in one’s imagination can come into play, including metaphors and religious themes, such as one’s relationship with God. 9 Once the different objects/people are staged, the protagonist has the opportunity to explore their meaning and meaning on a concrete level. This often means dying of previous perceptions of that person and their motivations. It is impossible to return to one’s own role after a reversal, and remain the same. A person knows something that was not known before. 10 Perhaps the greatest example of a role reversal is God’s assuming of humanity in Jesus Christ. Interestingly (as a psychodramalist, not a theologian) the redemptive work of redemption culminates in the cross where God, in the person of Jesus Christ, swapped roles with humanity, feeling our pain, Sin and lust then die in our place. Resurrection is the final seal that establishes our closeness to the Lord. From then on, nothing can separate us from the love of God.
