The Sitcom Effect: Why the World Secretly Loves Every Rehashed Plot Hollywood Throws At Us?

It is only in recent years that I can remember such an outcry against Hollywood for redoing, re-imagining, and rebooting every film in sight. Films that were once considered hallowed ground are being trampled upon with fresh new ideas and faces. Films that didn’t ever need to see the light of day again are being remade, and even films that were made in the last decade are being re imagined in a new way. All the while the complaint is always the same. “Why can’t Hollywood come up with any original ideas?”

I am not saying I wasn’t in that crowd or that I am still not. I was right there with every other moviegoer who rolled their eyes when Sony announced its reboot of the Spider man series, or when David Fincher chose to re imagine The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo as his next project, or when Sony announced the release of No Strings Attached only months after Paramount released its film, No Strings Attached, of the same premise. If someone wants to accuse Hollywood of reusing plots then they would be correct in doing so, because Hollywood is guilty of that, but is that really such a bad thing though? And are we really THAT mad over that fact?

In order to answer those questions I point you to Hollywood’s other medium besides film, television. Commercial television has been around for close to seventy years, and if you wanted to accuse anyone of reusing a plot line I’d say television companies are even more guilty of that crime than film studios. They have been reusing plot lines, and we love them for it. Case in point: I am currently watching the sixth season of How I Met Your Mother, an excellent sitcom that began in 2005. Anyway I find myself cheering on a regular basis for various characters to overcome obstacles, fall in love, and fall out of love. This is understandable of course, because after six seasons, I have grown pretty attached to these characters. The curious thing about it is that I can predict how a lot of the episodes will end, but I still enjoy them. Why is that?

Taking a slight detour, lets compare How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) to another sitcom I have completely watched, Scrubs, which came out in 2001. Both sitcoms are the same show. HIMYM has Ted Mosby as its main character who narrates the story at times while Scrubs has Doctor John “J.D.” Dorian who does the same thing. HIMYM has Marshall and Lily who are the couple who go through the trials of a long term relationship and marriage while Scrubs has Turk and Carla who go through the same problems. HIMYM has Barney Stinson who is a single player who fails at dating due to his personality and gives Ted advice on dating and life while Scrubs has Dr. Perry Cox who fails at dating because of his personality and gives J.D. advice on life and sometimes dating. HIMYM has Robin Sherbatsky as the attractive single lady who has a new boyfriend every few episodes while Scrubs has Elliot who is the attractive doctor who does the same thing. In the end, Elliot and J.D. end up together on Scrubs, and I am still holding out for Robin and Ted to end up together on HIMYM.

These are just a few of the similarities in the shows, and these are just two sitcoms. If we compared these two to other sitcoms such as Friends, Seinfeld, or even Cheers, there would be striking similarities in each of them. The amazing this is that all of these sitcoms were extremely popular in their time, and the sitcom is still a very popular form of television. So the question is why do I and the rest of the world still find ourselves cheering for the characters in HIMYM and for the characters in Scrubs and for the characters in Friends and for the characters in Seinfeld and for the characters in Cheers even though they are all practically the same characters going through the same plot lines over and over again?

The Sitcom Effect is the reason, and it is as follows: Given a certain character, if the audience can become emotionally invested in that character; that is, be able to effectively put themselves in place of that character, then that audience will follow that character to the ends of the earth and back. This is the backbone of good TV and is most apparent in sitcoms, but crime dramas are another perfect example of this. CBS currently has CSI:Las Vegas, CSI: Miami, and CSI: New York. I know of people including my parents who watched all three of these shows along with Without a Trace. They watched four CBS shows that were practically the same show except that each used a different location and different people.

Now this is not to say sitcoms have not striven to differentiate themselves from each other. If How I Met Your Mother did not try to be different then Scrubs then it would be Scrubs and not How I Met Your Mother. Each one has its differences. A sitcom’s skin is very unique but the skeleton is essentially the same. Whether the sitcom is shot in a mockumentary style like Modern Family and The Office, or the sitcoms centers more around a workplace or school like Parks and Recreation or Community, essentially they are all the same.

This brings us back to film. All too often I have heard that story is the key to making a good successful film. I don’t know if I believe that anymore, because film and television have been utilizing the same plot over and over again for decades, and yet we as entertainment junkies keep coming back. The Sitcom Effect keeps bringing us back again and again and, I think deep down we are okay with that. I can’t tell you how many times I have seen a film that had a great premise, but falls flat on its face, because the characters are stale and emotionless. Show us emotion and we, as the audience, will become emotional! It gives us hope to see this character who lives in an idealistic world and who we have invested so much time and effort into succeed in a big or small way, because we know, deep down inside, that if they can succeed or at least change for the better so can we or if they can find love then so can we or if they can conquer that army of invading aliens then so can we. The Sitcom Effect is really just a fancy term for hope. If you promise us hope, then we will follow you anywhere, Hollywood.

So the next time you automatically dismiss a film or show due to its “tired and overused” plot consider this. If the characters are people you can relate to and love, maybe that specific film or show is what you need. If that’s the case then embrace it, because, to be honest, Hollywood does not show any signs of slowing down the rehashing, revamping, and rebooting train anytime soon.

P.S. It was only recently that I found out that Brian De Palma’s iconic 1983 version of Scarface starring Al Pacino was a remake. Who would have thought a remake could be so beloved that it overshadowed its original which was made in 1932 and produced by Howard Hughes.
